About Me and My Work
I am an abstract painter and this also strongly influences my photography. My paintings and photography mainly explore the impact of the hidden, whether it be in the unconscious, in past history or somewhere in the present.
In painting I look to combine elements of being in and out of control in my use of materials, allowing the unconscious to have expression. My photography often includes content that is ‘there but not there’.
I have always been passionate about art and the beginnings of actually beginning to make it were during the 1980s when working as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist and expressing a desire to explore expressing meanings without words.
In 2014 I moved into a studio at Yorkshire Artspace after a gap of about ten years in my art work.
Between 1993-2005 I was a member of SCAT (Sheffield Contemporary Artists)
SCAT was an artist-led organisation whose main aim is to promote the work of contemporary artists living and working in and around Sheffield. The trust operated as a forum to encourage visual artists of all disciplines, and as an umbrella group to facilitate funding.
Within this a number of us worked or had an interest in mental health problems and as a result of this I started a special interest group within SCAT.
The main exhibitions I contributed to are:
1992 Driven to Abstraction Walkley Centre Gallery - joint exhibition with Joella Bruckshaw
1995-6 - Sheffield Contemporary Arts Trust at the Mappin. - Mappin Art Gallery, Sheffield
1997 Contemporary Diversions Clock Tower Gallery Northern General Hospital
1997 The Unconscious joint exhibition with University of Sheffield Centre for Psychotherapeutic Studies Lounge Gallery University of Sheffield
2000 - Concerning the Spiritual, Sheffield Cathedral, Selby Abbey
2003 States of Mind The Forum Sheffield
2004 Memories?... Dreams?... Lescar Community Project Gallery 2004
Since being at Yorkshire Artspace I have taken part in their open weekends and in Sheffield Open Up studios event.
